Ila D. Nielsen, age 90, of Erwin, passed away on Friday, December 15, 2023 at Lakebridge Nursing Home. She was a daughter of the late Stephen and Rena Clark Crain. Ila was a lifelong member at First Baptist Church in Erwin and most recently attended Central Baptist in Johnson City. She retired as a teacher from Unicoi County Schools after more than 30 years. Ila was a member of the Erwin Monday Club and the Criterion Book Club. In addition to her parents, Ila is preceded in death by her husband, Bob Nielsen; three sisters; and one brother. Ila D. Nielsen has left behind to cherish her memory: son, Robert Nielsen and wife Kim; daughter, Roberta Nielsen; granddaughter, Sophia Nielsen; sister, Ruth Johnson; several cousins; numerous nieces and nephews; and many extended family members. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Governor's Bend Assisted Living for their loving care over the last two years. The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Ila D. Nielsen in a funeral service to be held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 in the chapel at Valley Funeral Home. Reverend Tim Tapp and Gene Elliott will officiate. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 5:00 pm and will continue until service time on Tuesday. A graveside committal service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Those who wish to attend the committal service should meet at Mountain Home National Cemetery by 9:50 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made out to Central Baptist's Esther Sunday School Class 300 N Roan St, Johnson City, TN 37601. MRS. Neilson worked at Temple Hill School when I was growing up. Sweet lady and she cared so much about the kids. So sorry to hear she passed! Prayers for the family!

Ila was such a sweet lady. Her laughter was contagious. Her joy for music shared comfort for many. I'm so thankful to have had the opportunity to meet such a gem.
